Animale | Umano is a drama/coming of age story about the passage from childhood to adulthood focusing on the symbolic relationship that unfolds between Matteo and the calf Fandango, until man and animal actually meet.
Animale | Umano, director Alessandro Pugno's first fictional work, written with Natacha Kucic, is "a cinematic work that uses bullfighting as a narrative pretext for a timeless and universal story, which questions the definitions of 'animal' and 'human' asking instead what they have in common".
The film was produced by Daniele Segre and Daniele De Cicco’s Redibis Film, in a 14-week production process. The Spanish part was filmed in Seville, Spain between November 2021 and April 2022.
In January 2022, filming began in Piedmont, in Casale Monferrato, setting for the story, continuing with nine days in Turin and outskirts. A private house in Pino Torinese was home for little Matteo (Ian Caffo), while the municipality of Avigliana, for the funeral home, saw two days of filming. Venaria Reale provided the setting for the final scene of the production, a pickup to connect with scenes shot in Casale Monferrato of the coach taking little Matteo and his class on a school trip to Spain. The coach was provided by local transport company STAT.
