Piazza Palazzo di Città in Turin takes its name from the Municipality that has occupied the west façade for centuries, facing the porticoes that line the other three sides. It is still referred to as Piazza delle Erbe (herb square) from the market once held here (today the piazza has a monthly market), although its most picturesque nickname is Borsa dei Bugiardi (the stock market of liars) which could have referred to both the market vendors and the civic representatives gathered at the municipal assemblies.
The piazza was redesigned by Benedetto Alfieri in 1756 who created the porticoes as an amphitheatre facing the municipal offices. The gallows were removed in 1853 (the piazza was previously used for public executions), replaced by the statue of Amedeo IV of Savoy, a valorous 14th century knight known as Count Verde, designed by Pelagio Palagi.
