Where it was filmed 'Mare Fuori'

The Sea Beyond is set in a juvenile detention centre in Naples.

The inmates include Carmine Di Salvo (Massimiliano Caiazzo) and Filippo Ferrari (Nicolas Maupas): the former an aspiring hairdresser who wants to escape from the way his Camorra family lives; the latter, a promising pianist born into a wealthy family in Milan. When they are both arrested and locked up in juvenile detention, they become best friends and trigger a chain of events that affects everyone around them. Their presence becomes a serious threat to the leadership of Ciro Ricci (Giacomo Giorgio), son of a Camorra boss. In the female sector, Naditza (Valentina Romani) is a Roma girl with whom Filippo has a tricky love story.

The kids become adults as they face up to their fears and work out their dreams in prison. They are assisted on their journey by the judicious care and discipline dispensed by Borstal director Paola (Carolina Crescentini) and Commander Massimo (Carmine Recano), who are determined to give the young people in their charge the opportunity to change their ways and live honestly.

Locations in Season 1

The set for the juvenile detention centre was built at the Navy base on the San Vincenzo dock in Naples, by a set design department made up entirely of locals, guided by set designer Antonio Farina.

The city of Naples and its most emblematic locations provides the background to the characters and their stories: the Gianturco district, piazza del Plebiscito, rione Sanità, the Centro Direzionale, via Tribunali, via Toledo, the Toledo metro station, panoramic via Orazio, via Petrarca, Villa Doria D'Angri, Posillipo, Villa Grottamarina, the Fuorigrotta neighbourhood, the Montesanto area, corso Vittorio Emanuele, the footpath of San Martino, the salita di Santa Lucia al Monte, the stairs of Santa Maria Apparente and Monaldi Hospital(where Nina (Greta Esposito) has the first ultrasound).

Sequences were also filmed at Salerno harbour and in Cava de' Tirreni, which served as the city of Udine in scenes with Gemma (Serena Codato).

The soundtrack, expertly constructed by Stefano Lentini, contributes significantly to the presentation of the different settings thanks to a mix of diegetic music (the piano played by the characters), trap/rap (with the participation of Neapolitan singer-songwriter Raiz) and the Choir of Children's Voices of Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto.

Locations in Season 2

New stories are introduced to the juvenile detention centre in Naples in Season 2, along with new characters who include Kubra (Kyshan Wilson) and Sasà (Filippo Soave). Filippo and Naditza's love is put to the test. Carmine is lost and vulnerable after Nina’s death, while Edoardo tries to take Ciro's place as leader.

The main locations return: the set on San Vincenzo pier and the city of Naples, including the Luzzatti district, via Petrarca, rione Sanità, the Mergellina neighbourhood, Posillipo and its Rocce Verdi beach. In addition, the Church of San Domenico Maggiore is featured where Naditza is about to marry her cousin before Filippo's arrival.

Some scenes, including Carmine's imaginary moments with Nina, were filmed on the beach of Castel Volturno(Caserta).

The soundtrack of Season 2, again produced by Stefano Lentini, includes a collaboration with Raiz, "Amore che fa male", and with Matteo Paolillo, who write "Sangue Nero" which features the voices of two series regulars: Domenico Cuomo and Serena Codato.

Locations in Season 3

In Season 3, the kids of The Sea Beyond have grown up and must make choices about the roles they will take as adults in the world. Love is one route that guides them to new aspects of themselves. Some lose themselves in this feeling, for others it is a beacon that can lead them to the light.

New inmates arrive at the institute: Giulia (Clara Soccini), a trapper in a Milanese gang, the Di Meo brothers (Francesco Panarella, Giuseppe Pirozzi) who are imprisoned for destroying a hospital along with Dobermann (Salahudin Tijani Imrana).

The main setting is the same: Naples and its iconic places which include the Maschio Angioino, galleria Umberto, the Botanical Gardens, rione Sanità, Montesanto, piazza Monteoliveto, the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi in Vomero and the islet of Nisida where the real-life Borstal of Naples is located. Scenes were also filmed in Pozzuoli and Bacoli, in particular on Capo Miseno beach and at the Piscina Mirabilis.

The municipalities of Gragnano, Somma Vesuviana and Torre del Greco, and the coast of Castel Volturno(Caserta) also provide backgrounds.
