Flanked by river Coscile, Castrovillari (province of Cosenza) stands on a natural dip known as “Conca del Re”, at 362 m above sea level. Surrounded by the Calabro–Lucano Apennine, the town is the largest centre in the Pollino National Park.
Castrovillari is divided in two: the modern area on flat land, and the medieval settlement, anciently known as Civita, positioned high above the plain of Sibari on a rocky spur whose centre contains its most important historical and artistic heritage. This includes the Aragonese Castle, the Francescan Protoconvent, built in 1220 and restructured many times which now houses the little Archaeological museum of Castrovillari, and the Church of St. Joseph built in the latter half of the 16th century.
The town is well known for its traditional Carnival, which began in 1635.
