Paola (province of Cosenza) is on the riviera dei Cedri, a stretch of coastline with broad beaches and transparent sea. The area, which extends to the mountains on the edge of the coast, is a well-known pilgrimage destination, given the presence of the 14th century Sanctuary of St. Francis of Paola, centre for the Order of Minor Friars and dedicated to the saint born in the town.
The many places of interest in Paola include: the Cathedral or Church of Our Lady of the Annunciation, rebuilt in Gothic style in the 15th century; the Monastery Catino of Santa Maria della Valle Giosafat (known as the Badia) which dates to Norman times; the 16th century arch of St. Francis, the entrance gate to the historical centre; and the tower of the Castle of Paola, positioned on a rock above the historical centre and once part of an ancient system of fortifications that defended the territory.
