The town of Cassano allo Ionio (province of Cosenza) is located on the southern slopes of mount Pollino in the Sibari plain. Its origins lie in the Neolithic era as the archaeological artefacts discovered in 16 karst caves, known as the caves of St. Angelo, attest.
The town’s most important monuments include: the Cathedral (Basilica) della Natività della Beata Vergine Maria del Lauro in piazza Sant'Eusebio, which tradition holds was built over a temple to Jupiter. The Cathedral – on a Latin cross – has a sumptuous dome, a bell tower from 1608 and a Baroque façade decorated with stone and plasterwork.
The Sibarite thermal baths near the town date to the 7th century, their name deriving from a hamlet of Cassano – Sibari, an important city in Magna Grecia whose origins can be seen in the archaeological sites of Parco del Cavallo, Prolungamento Strada, Casabianca and Stombi.
