San Giovanni in Fiore (province of Cosenza), the most populous mountain village in Italy, stands on a slope at the foot of Montenero, on the Sila plateau, surrounded by woods, forests, lakes and water courses. Development of the residential settlement began with the founding of the Florense Abbey in the 12th century by Abbot Gioacchino da Fiore in the lower part of the village. The abbey has preserved its original Romanesque style with a Gothic portal on the façade and conserves the urn with Gioacchino da Fiore’s remains. Near the Abbey is an ogival Norman arch dating to the 12th century.
Numerous places of worship followed the abbey, built in the historical centre and outside the village, including the Capuchin Convent on an isolated hill and the Monastery of Three Boys in the hamlet of Fantino. Piazza Abate Gioacchino is lined with buildings and palaces dating to 1700-1800 including palazzo Lopez, palazzo Nicoletti and palazzo Romei.
