Built as a defensive fortress, the 14th century Rocca of Riolo Terme (Ravenna) was further reinforced in the mid 15thcentury by Caterina Sforza; it passed to the Holy See in 1506 and then to the municipal administration.
Extending over 4 levels, with 4 corner towers, restoration of the Castle focussed on recovering, where possible, its original structure, destined to house the nascent Museum of Gastronomy and an exhibition space for 20th century and contemporary art. Artists who have exhibited here include Giovanni Bellettini, Mario Addis, Mirella Saluzzo and Pablo Echuarren.
Immediately beside the ancient perimeter walls of Riolo is a park embellished with sculptures, placed amid the vegetation, by artist Giovanni Bertozzi (Gio Bert) who was born in Brisighella and lives in the town. These include a monumental sculpture and 18 reliefs inspired by Leonida Costa’s Le 127 giornate di Riolo, a literary account of the dramatic four-plus months when the town was a key stronghold for the Resistance in 1944-45, making this a park dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Nazi Fascist regimes and the pain caused by that violence.
