Palazzo Rosso, one of the best examples of Bolognese Art Nouveau, is located in Bentivoglio (Bologna), stretching out over the Navile canal.
Built by Marquis Carlo Alberto Pizzardi in 1887 as a manor house, the building features splendid decorations by Achille Casanova based on a design by Augusto Sezanne, depicting settings in the local marshy area.
The entrance welcomes visitors with a charming depiction of ducks in flight over an immense field of yellow iris and, on the piano nobile above, with friezes of roses, irises, lemons and hyacinths which decorate the pastel- coloured rooms along both sides of the corridor.
The "sala dello zodiaco", which opens onto the loggia, built between 1896 and 1897 by Augusto Sezanne and used by Carlo Alberto Pizzardi as a sundial for consulting and interpreting the sky, is a masterpiece of decoration: the ceiling depicts the terrestrial evolution of the phases of the moon and a stylized Sun, with rays of intense red; the walls divided into three sections, from top to bottom, feature the signs of the zodiac and the local marshy landscape with its birds and waters with their abundance of fish and vegetation.
Today Palazzo Rosso houses the municipal library, City Hall and a space for cultural activities. The "Sala dello Zodiaco", which can accommodate approximately 60 people, is used for meetings and debates, conferences, exhibitions and weddings.
