The rione Monti is the first rione of Rome and has its roots in the origins of the city itself. The area takes its name from the term "li monti", which the Romans used to indicate a specific vast and sparsely inhabited area which comprised three of the seven city hills (included in the Monti coat of arms): the Esquiline, the Viminale and part of the Quirinale. Today, the Esquiline no longer belongs to the territory and so is not.
Significant urbanisation changed its appearance completely in the 19th century, as can still be seen in the area between the Viminale and the Quirinale. The archaeological area of the Imperial Fora, providing a glimpse of Ancient Rome, was brought to light in the Fascist period, while the Suburra best preserves the picturesque atmosphere of the past.
Monti is home to two important places of worship: the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the preeminent church of Rome and the Catholic world, and the Papal Basilica of St. Mary Major with its Early Christian structure.
The focal point of the district is piazza della Madonna dei Monti, near the busy, well-known streets of via Nazionale and via Cavour. Worthy of note, especially for the number of restaurants, is via del Boschetto.
