Little Lake Fimon in Arcugnano, just kilometres from Vicenza, is surrounded by the Berici hills. With an average depth of 2m, it is the oldest lake in Northern Italy with a memory dating to the glaciation of the Neozoic Age (35,000 years ago).
It was formed during the glaciation when the valley was blocked by an accumulation of debris from the Astico and Bacchiglione rivers that raised the level of the soil and prevented the waters in the Fimon area from flowing outwards. Archaeological remains in the area, discovered mostly thanks to the work of local naturalist Paolo Lioy in the 1800s, demonstrate the presence of human settlements in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages: examples can be seen on the Valli di Fimon archaeological route.
The surrounding vegetation features willow and poplar trees, waterlilies and water chestnuts. Species of fish include carp, tench, pike and eel.
