Lake Vedana is located in the municipality of Sospirolo (Belluno), within the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park, south of monti del Sole and east of lake Mis. Glacial in origin, the small lake is positioned in a place called Masiere on the original bed of river Cordevole, where rocks and debris are covered with vegetation fed by underground veins of water.
There is a wide and varied range of flora: the waterlilies that flower in May are particularly characteristic of the lake as are the 2m tall fronds of lakeshore bulrush on its shores. Fauna includes various species of fish; amphibians like common toads, mountain frogs, tree frogs, newts; and birds such as herons, mallards and moorhens.
In the nearby rural borgo of San Gottardo, the Vedana Charterhouse is an ancient monastery where Girolamo Segato, cartographer, naturalist and Egyptologist, was born.
