Piazza Libertà is located in the historic centre of Bassano del Grappa (province of Vicenza). Rectangular in shape, it is characterised by an elegant portico, the neo-classical façade of the Church of St. John Baptist and the loggia of the Town Hall. The loggia was built during the 15th century and several years later was embellished with a large blue-faced clock created by mastro Corrado da Feltre.
Facing the Church of St John, on the opposite side of the square, are the case (houses) dei Remondini, founders of one of the biggest publishing companies of the 18th century. Giovanni Antonio Remondini established a print press in 1660 which was developed by his heirs, making Bassano a central location for the printed paper industry.
On the square’s western perimeter are two columns: one holds the lion of St. Mark, symbol of the Venetian Republic; the other a statue of the city’s patron, St. Bassianus, by the workshop of Orazio Marinali.
