The third episode in the Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) saga takes the IMF – Impossible Mission Force – team to the heart of Vatican City State where a terrorist plans on selling a mysterious weapon. As a way of getting into the tiny state in the heart of Rome, Ethan and his partner create a traffic jam by staging an argument along the walls of viale Vaticano. The agent manages to avoid the security cameras and scale the boundary walls, only to find the façade of the Reggia di Caserta on the other side. The interiors of the Reggia were used as the setting for the reception in the Vatican where Maggie Q manages to gate-crash using an entrance that is actually in via della Pilotta, in the Trevi neighbourhood of Rome.
The early scenes where the agents try to save a kidnapped colleague were shot in Berlin: the spectacular scenes at night amidst the skyscrapers of Shanghai were shot in Los Angeles: Ethan’s wife, Julia, is rescued in the old city of Xitang, China.
