“Rome! By all means, Rome. I will cherish my visit here in memory as long as I live”.
The arrival in Rome of Princess Anna (Audrey Hepburn) is announced by a view of St. Peter’s Square and a parade in her honour along Via dei Fori Imperiali. She is staying at her embassy in Palazzo Barberini but, drawn to the outside world and tired of her official commitments, she escapes the palace (actually in Via delle Quattro Fontane) in a van, getting out only when it stops in front of the Naiadi Fountain in Piazza della Repubblica.
American journalist Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck) finds her in the dead of night, asleep at the Arch of Septimius Severus in the Roman Forum. As he can’t understand the address she gives him to be able to take her home, he takes her to his studio apartment in Via Margutta 51. The next day the princess enjoys a few hours of freedom: she takes a turn around the centre of Rome, visits the Trevi Fountain, and then goes to Piazza di Spagna, where, whilst sitting on the steps to the Trinità dei Monti church, she once again bumps into Joe, who has meanwhile realised who she is. He proposes a tour around the city and the first stop is Bar Rocca, at the Pantheon. The tour starts off on the back of a Vespa, and takes in the Colosseum, Piazza Venezia, and the Santa Maria in Cosmedin walkway, where they visit the Mouth of Truth.
The day draws to a close at a party on a boat under Ponte Sant’Angelo, with Castel Sant’Angelo in the background. They are the last moments the pair spend together: the princess returns to her gilded cage, but there’s still time for one last encounter at the press conference in the Galleria della Sala Grande in Palazzo Colonna in Piazza Santi Apostoli.
