Fontana Liri (FR), which gets its name from the “Abballo Fountain” and the Liri River that passes through the area, has two small residential centres: the higher part is the oldest settlement and the lower the more modern. They are linked by 300 steps of the panoramic staircase.
The area features the Solfatara Lake, whose waters come from a sulphur source, which is located in a place believed to have once been the villa of Scipio the Great and the small Chapel of Santa Maria de' Zupponis or de' Zapponi, whose name derives from Zotone, a Longobard Duke of Benevento, who built a fortress here at the end of the 6th century, documented in 1006 as Castellum Zupponi.
