Anagni, historic city in the Ciociaria area, was a centre for the Hernici and one of the so-called Cities of Saturn, whose foundation legend is linked to the God Saturn. Conquered by the Romans in 306 BCE, it was known in the Christian era as the City of the Popes because it was the papal residence and birthplace for four popes (Innocence III, Alexander IV, Gregory IX, Boniface VIII). It is also famous as the setting for an episode known as the Schiaffo di Anagni (1303), when Pope Boniface VIII was embroiled in arguments and discussions over the temporal power of the church.
The medieval centre of Anagni features the Palace of Boniface VIII, the Palazzo Civico, the Barnekow House and numerous churches, including the Cathedral di Santa Maria (11th-13th century), which has a crypt and frescoes, and is a masterpiece of 13th century Italian art known as the “Sistine Chapel of the Middle Ages”.
