Sperlonga (LT) rises on a rocky spur of the Colle San Magno, the tip of the Monti Aurunci range, that extends into the Tyrrhenian Sea and Gulf of Gaeta. The surrounding territory is mostly flat. The coastline alternates soft white sand beach with rocky spurs jutting into the sea to create beautiful bays, often only accessible by boat. These rocky formations can be found to the south of the town in the direction of the Gaeta promontory.
The borgo is typically Mediterranean: with white buildings and narrow streets offering occasional glimpses of the sea. The historical centre features the former Church of Maria de Speloncae (today a conference centre) and the piazzetta del Pozzetto that opens out amid white, ivy-covered houses, named for the ancient well at the centre; one of its enclosing walls features paintings of the story of the Saracen invasions. A little bridge leads from the historical centre to Torre Truglia on the tip of the promontory. This was built in 1532 on the site of a previous Roman tower to defend the town from pirates.
The Villa of Tiberius, brought to light in the 1950s, is a site that records the excesses of Imperial Rome: it includes a nymphaeum-cave, fish breeding ponds and a thermal bath. Today the site hosts the National Archaeological Museum.
