Description

Construction of the Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi, a hunting lodge also used by the Savoy family for entertaining, began in 1729 to a design by Filippo Juvarra and is one of the monumental jewels of Turin. Built on land included in the first donation made by Emanuel Philibert to the Order of St. Maurice and St. Lazarus (1573), it is today owned by the Fondazione Ordine Mauriziano, is part of the circuit of the Royal Savoy Residences in Piedmont and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. Following significant restoration work, it was reopened to the public, and conserves its original furnishings, paintings and marquetry masterpieces.

The heart of the structure is the large oval salon at the centre, the starting point for four arms on a St. Andrew’s cross, divided by the treelined avenue that links the Reggia to Turin and is flanked by farmhouses and stables. The central salon, with a double height ceiling and concave-convex balconies, features the Statue of the Deer by Francesco Ladatte. The wings house the Royal Apartments and guest apartments. The 137 rooms and 17 galleries are decorated in Rococo Italian style, with lacquer, porcelain, gilded plasterwork and mirrors. The rooms cover a total of 31,000 sqm, the adjacent buildings 14,000 sqm while the park alone occupies 150,000 sqm.
