South of the Gargano Promontory and the Gulf of Manfredonia, Barletta is both a town and a province (Barletta-Andria-Trani).
A recognised Città d’Arte (Town of artistic interest), Barletta has elegant architecture and precious museum collections. At the heart of the ancient centre is the Castle, one of the most beautiful Renaissance fortresses of the Southern Italy and now home to the Municipal Museum. Nearby is the Cathedral of St. Mary Major, one of the four “palace” churches in Apulia.
Famous for the 16th century Joust of Barletta (Disfida), it is possible to visit the Cantina della Disfida, a national monument inside a 14th century palace. Just outside the historical centre, the Palazzo della Marra houses the art gallery Pinacoteca Giuseppe de Nittis with over 200 paintings by the impressionist who was born here.
The sea is another source of pride for the city, with a large commercial and tourist harbour and sandy beaches, while local production boasts the ruby red wine, Rosso Barletta DOC.
Heading 9km out of Barletta towards Andria, the archaeological area of Canne della Battiglia, originally Cannae, is the site of Hannibal’s victory over the Roman army (216 B.C.E.).
