Just over 10km from Bari, Bitonto conserves the fascinating remains of the military fortifications of the past, long stretches of wall and numerous towers built by the Normans and the Angevins (House of Anjou).
The town is studded with elegant places of worship, including the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in piazza Minerva, the Sanctuary of Cosma and Damiano, the Baroque Church of St. Dominic and the Abbey of St. Leo, with its 14th century bell tower and 16th century cloister. The surrounding countryside contains numerous rock churches such as Santa Croce, Torre Cela, Sant’Eugenio, San Basilio.
Known as the City of Olive Trees, Bitonto is famous in Italy for its exceptional olive oil.
