Trani looks out over the Adriatic Sea with the elegance of an amphitheatre made from light stone, with the port, which has been perfectly restored, as its crowning jewel.
The enchanting Cathedral of San Nicola Pellegrino, taller than most religious buildings in the region, is a Romanesque gem suspended over the sea, containing rich interior decorations, two crypts, the crypt of San Nicola and the crypt of Santa Maria, and the underground shrine of San Leucio.
A stone’s throw from the Cathedral is the imposing Swabian Castle commissioned by Emperor Frederick II, whilst behind the port the narrow alleyways of the Jewish quarter, Giudecca, wind between ancient synagogues and artisan workshops. Nearby the Villa Comunale, a relaxing public park, overlooks the sea, whilst a mile or so away from the town is the Monastery of Santa Maria Colonna.
Nestled between the piers of Santa Maria and Sant’Antonio, the hub for local nightlife and the beating heart of the town, is the elegant port overlooking the Adriatic Sea, the perfect setting to buy fresh fish or sip a glass of Moscato on the seafront.
