Polignano a Mare is a municipality of the metropolitan city of Bari in Apulia. The oldest area of the town sits on a rocky outcrop that plunges down to the Adriatic Sea 33km south of Bari.
The town’s economy is driven essentially by tourism and horticulture.
Its sea caves are features of particular natural interest, while historical places include the old town and the traces of Roman occupation such as the bridge on Trajan’s Way (Via Traiana), which crosses Lama Monachile and is still used today.
Since 2008 Polignano a Mare has been awarded the Blue Flag by the Foundation for Environmental Education, which identifies European coastal towns that meet quality criteria for their bathing waters and the service offered in terms of beach cleanliness and facilities for tourists.
