An imposing castle and ancient walls mark the stunning town of Monopoli, which is reflected in the Adriatic Sea and located 40km from Bari.
The 99 town districts which stretch out across flat terrain, can be seen in one glimpse from Loggia del Pilato on the road heading towards Selva di Fasano, a natural terrace overlooking a landscape characterised by fortified farms (masserie), churches, cave dwellings and villas.
Symbol of the city is the Castle of Charles V on the promontory of Punta Penna, today an exhibition and conference space. The fortified farms of the area, well preserved or restored with great care, are located in the heart of the marina, in the low hills and on the flat plains surrounding the city. In the neighbouring countryside, the Lama degli Ulivi Botanical Garden is home to caves, rock churches, and over 2,000 species of Mediterranean plants.
