The capital of the Apulia region, the city of Bari and its two sides: the elegant Murat quarter and the hypnotic Bari Vecchia, which extends along the Adriatic Sea, is an enchanting place to discover.
Gateway to the old city is the grand Swabian Castle, crowned with towers, once a defence system and later a Renaissance residence. The Pilgrim’s Arch leads to the heart of the Cittadella Nicolaiana, the Cathedral of St. Nicholas (patron saint of the city) which is an excellent example of Apulian Romanesque architecture, and the Romanesque Cathedral of San Sabino, with its Baroque crypt. The 19th century quarter of Bari, built during the reign of Joachim Murat, features elegant buildings such as the Teatro Petruzzelli, the Teatro Piccinni and Palazzo Fizzarotti, while there are hidden treasures beneath the surface, rock churches and underground dwellings including the Temple of St. George, the Madia Diana Ipogeo and the “Jewish Ipogeo”.
Bari plays a key role in relationships with the Mediterranean coastal countries with its strategically placed harbour, airport and the Fiera del Levante. The city celebrates its patron, St. Nicholas, in December and in May with the Historical Cortège of St. Nicholas.
