Palazzo della Signoria, known as Palazzo Vecchio, is today Florence’s town hall and a museum, and is located in the centre of Piazza della Signoria, which is dominated by the Loggia dei Lanzi, an open-air museum of sculptures featuring masterpieces of the likes of Benvenuto Cellini’s Perseus and Giambologna’s The Rape of the Sabine Women. The first floor of Palazzo Vecchio is home to one of the most exquisite halls in Italy, the Salone dei Cinquecento, with works by Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci and a magnificent ceiling featuring 39 panels painted by Vasari. On the second floor are the private quarters of the Medici court. They include the enchanting Cappella di Eleonora, the Audience Chamber, the Lily Chamber, and the Hall of Geographical Maps.
