The State Nature Reserve of the Roman Coastline extends for 15,900 hectares across a territory that includes coastal areas reclaimed by draining at the end of the 1800s, Macchiagrande, the Park of Castel Fusano, the end of the River Tiber.
The reserve is a mosaic of environments protected from urbanization that includes evergreen woods, river banks and deltas, dunes, wetlands, swathes of Mediterranean undergrowth and Roman countryside of surprising beauty, with many agricultural areas, dominated by the straight lines of the channels, basins and draining pumps of the large scale reclamation work, plus archaeological sites such as Ostia Antica.
