The ancient village of Galatone stands on a hillside covered with vines and fig trees, 25km from Lecce. It can be reached by a triumphal passage through its Byzantine roots and the Porta San Sebastiano, the only example remaining of the gates that provided access to the Kastellion for those coming from the neighbouring koria, ancient rural communities. The spiritual path of the village is studded with miracles of faith, which has left tangible traces in the Sanctuary of the Most Sacred Crucifix, a pilgrimage site whose stunning 17th century Baroque facade is lit with a luxurious combination of local limestone and Lecce stone. The interior is equally sumptuous and seductive, richly decorated with large paintings of miracles.
Moorish-style, art-deco villas inspired by exotic lands on the roads of the bucolic Galatone countryside, bear elegant witness to past noble pastimes.
