Maglie is situated in the heart of the Salento region, 30km from Lecce and just 16km from the Otranto coast. The town, which includes the hamlet of Morigino, is considered the “drawing room” of Salento, attracting visitors for its shopping opportunities, walks through its ancient centre or a coffee at the Caffè della Libertà. Surrounded by churches and noble palaces, the Piazza Aldo Moro commemorates the statesman born here, as does his statue. The elegant park of Villa Tamborino, with a pavilion decorated with garlands and cornucopias, is spread out close to the centre. Pride of the town is the Museo l’Alca which displays over 2,500 artefacts relating to prehistory, palaeontology and ethnology. The surrounding countryside is studded with numerous menhirs, including Spruno, Delle Franite and Calamauri and dolmens, including those of Chianca, Canali and Masseria Nuova.
