Castrignano de’ Greci, 27km from Lecce, is the land of the Griko (a variant of Greek) dialect shared by the 11 towns of the Union of Grecìa Salentina. The village of Castrignano has been the repository of this precious immaterial heritage for years, a centre of linguistic debate and active teaching. The graceful Piazzetta Sant’Antonio features a clock tower with elegant bell gable, while the history and beauty of the village can be seen in the streets of the centre where the courtyards, àvili in Greek, surrounding the Baronial palace conserve the heritage of ancient civilisations. The precious Byzantine Crypt of Sant’Onofrio was built by Basilian monks in the entrance to a natural cave in the 6th century C.E., while the Church of Our Lady of the Annunciation holds nine paintings by Saverio Altamura (1892). Outside the historical centre, the atmospheric Parco Pozzelle features a hundred wells carved out of the rock, used in the past to provide the local population with rain water.
