In the lush Valle di Comino, on a hill 420m above the river Melfa, stands the small centre of Casalattico (FR), whose name derives from Cicero’s relative, Pomponio Attico, who possessed a villa here in the hamlet of Montattico. Ownership later passed to the County of Arpino, to the Church and, in 1400, to the Dukes of Sora. The Church of San Barbato conserves canvases by the Polish painter Taddeo Kuntz (1732-1793) and others from the Neapolitan School of Santafede. The hamlet of Mortale, today Monforte to mark the birthplace of the famous hotelier, Lord Charles Forte, and Montattico both provide excellent starting points for excursions to the Monte Cairo mountains looming above.
