The medieval village of Dolceacqua, in the province of Imperia, stands in the heart of the Val Nervia between Ventimiglia and Bordighera, its ancient alleyways climbing the hills of the Ligurian countryside. Built along the Nervia watercourse which separates the ancient buildings perched on one side from the more recent ones on the facing shore, Dolceacqua offers unforgettable views and an architecture in harmony with the landscape. One example is the 14th century Romanesque bridge, painted by many including Monet, whose graceful, single stone arch reaches over 30 m high.
The historic centre includes various important buildings such as the 15th century Church of St. Anthony Abbot which contains a poliptych of the “Devoted Saint” by Ludovico Brea and the 10th century Church of St. George at the entrance to the city with the tombs of Stefano and Giulia Doria. Dominating the surroundings are the surviving walls of the Castle of Dolceacqua, a fortified noble residence dating to the 13th century.
Dolceacqua is an important production area for extra virgin olive oil and the local DOC red wine: Rossese di Dolceacqua.
