Vernazza is one of the villages of the Cinque Terre, the coastline on the Ligurian Riviera di Levante that stretches between Punta Mesco and Punta di Montenero.
Set in a natural harbour, Vernazza is a true Ligurian fishing village, whose colourful houses cluster along the slopes of the surrounding hills dominated by terraced vineyards.
The Church of St. Margaret of Antioch stands on the coast with a Romanesque 11th century bell tower which has undergone several adaptations and restoration attempts.
On a rock on the opposite side of the bay, the Doria Castle rises 70m above the sea, appearing to continue its defence of the population. Both its cylindrical tower and the terrace which follows the irregular shape of the rock are easily accessible today and considered an excellent observation point for a view of the coastline.
