The fishing village of Cervo, 10km from Imperia, stands at the end of the Cervo stream. The village stretches from hilltop to seashore, its medieval origins evident in the narrow alleys and streets.
The village has a background of green hills with olive groves and pine forests, and partly overlooks the Ligurian Sea. Seen from the sea, Cervo is a graded pyramid of colourful houses, whose terraces, arches and staircases interlink the key areas of the village.
These include the hilltop Church of St. John the Baptist, which is also known as the “Chiesa dei Corallini” because its construction in the 1600/1700s was financed by the coral fishermen. The concave facade of this baroque church contributes to the perfect acoustics of the Piazza dei Corallini, overlooking the sea, where the annual Festival Internazionale di Musica da Camera | International Festival of Chamber Music (July – August) has been held since 1964. Nearby is the 17th century Castello dei Clavesana, built by the Marquisate of that name, and now the setting for the Museo Etnografico del Ponente Ligure Franco Ferrero.
