Description

The old borgo of Balestrino (SV), now uninhabited, is located on a rocky spur near Loano, rising steeply above the River Barescione. Although the old centre first began to empty out in 1850 when an earthquake undermined the safety of the buildings, it was only a century later, between 1962 and 1963, that the continual landslides and tremors forced the inhabitants to leave forever and rebuild further down the valley. Today the new houses surround the remains of the old borgo, now a ghost village, which is dominated by the medieval Del Carretto Castle and features narrow alleyways, unpaved streets, wooden doors and window frames where nature has reclaimed the damaged old buildings and everything has stopped, even the church clock and the ancient sundial no longer tell the time.
