Tellaro is a small seaside borgo perched above and overlooking the gulf of La Spezia. It is the easternmost hamlet in the municipality of Lerici (SP) and is reached by travelling a coastal road with breath-taking views that starts in Lerici and passes through Maralunga and Fiascherino.
The borgo, with narrow alleyways and colourful houses, hosts the Oratory of St. Mary and the Church of St. George with its bell tower. There are quiet beaches near the residential centre, including one accessible from the Church of St. George with a rocky cliff and a small harbour.
Tellaro is famous for its underwater Christmas: on Christmas Eve, the statue of Baby Jesus emerges from the water, brought by a group of divers and deposited in a manger, accompanied by fireworks over the sea amidst thousands of lights.
Many artists have travelled through and lived in the borgo including the painter Arnold Böcklin, and writers such as Henry James, Charles Tomlinson, Virginia Woolf, Mario Soldati, Attilio Bertolucci, Giovanni Giudici, Eugenio Montale, Mary Shelley and D. H. Lawrence.
