Located on a hill at about 300m above sea level, the historical centre of Rossano is part of the municipality of Corigliano-Rossano (province of Cosenza), in the eastern Sibari plateau between the mountains and the Ionian coast. Founded by the Oenotrians in approx. 11th century B.C.E., Rossano experienced a period of great social, artistic and cultural growth under Byzantine rule between 540 and 1059 C.E.
Places of interest include: the 11th century Cathedral of Maria Santissima Achiropita; the Church of San Nilo, a saint who travelled to Grottaferrata, on the outskirts of Rome, where he founded a Greek Abbey; the Byzantine oratory of St. Mark; and the Norman tower of St. Angelo. The Museo diocesano e del Codex conserves the priceless, illuminated 6th century Codex Purpureus Rossanensis, of Byzantine origin, based on the New Testament and inscribed as UNESCO “World Memory” Heritage.
The seaside area of Sant’Angelo with its coastal road is particularly busy in the summer thanks to its fine, white sand beaches. The area of Rossano also includes the Giganti di Cozzo del Pesco Nature Oasis, a reserve in Sila greca, with ancient chestnut trees, some of which date to the second half of the 13th century.
