Castro dei Volsci (FR) is perched on a hill near the Monti Ausoni range overlooking the Valley del Sacco.
Inhabited since antiquity, the area was disputed by the Papacy and the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I who conquered it in 1165. It was governed by papal emissaries from the 13th century and passed to the Colonna family in the 1400s. Between 1700 and 1800, Castro was heavily caught up in the brigandage of the time.
The urban layout of the village features paved little streets and alleys with equestrian steps and is a very peaceful place, immersed in an area of almost unreal silence. Its natural panoramic overlook offers a view of the entire valley of the Ciociaria.
