Villa Museo Clarence Bicknell in Bordighera (IM) is a museum and library complex and headquarters for the Istituto Internazionale di Studi Liguri (International Institute of Ligurian Studies). Clarence Bicknell built the museum in 1888 to unite, conserve and display his archaeological and botanical collections.
The villa has a rectangular shape, its entrance inspired by Roman architecture with a four-column portico built by the British architect Clarence Trait. The rooms inside are reminiscent of Anglican churches with a kind of raised choir area.
The library counts approx. 85,000 books, 3,000 art and local history magazines and 14,000 engravings. The nature section alone has over 300 books about flora, fauna and botany plus Charles Darwin’s books on the origin and evolution of the species.
The villa is surrounded by a garden of ancient and exotic plants, including a monumental example of Ficus macrophylla, which stands close to the entrance, an Australian tea-tree, African palm trees and South American jacarandas.
