Villa Ormond in Sanremo (IM) houses the Istituto Internazionale di Diritto Umanitario (International Institute of Humanitarian Rights). It was built in 1890 for the Swiss businessman Michel Louis Ormond and his wife in an elevated position, surrounded by a large garden.
The single storey structure extends lengthways, an open space outside leading to paths and staircases linked to the garden. The villa has a wide terrace with two Renaissance loggias at the sides and a pronaos at the entrance.
The garden has kept its original design with a classic Italian garden at the centre and a structure of plant themed “rooms”: the palm grove, the cedars, the Ficus area. There is also a Japanese garden inspired by Zen philosophy with plants from Japan, the product of the twinning of Sanremo and Atami in Japan.
The villa has welcomed numerous illustrious guests over the years, including Prussian princes, the Duke of Aosta and Princess Elisabeth of Austria.
The gardens were recently restored by the landscape designer Paolo Pejrone.
