Baroque Villa Regina Margherita, in Bordighera (IM), was built in 1916 for Queen Margherita of Savoy.
The structure has a basement, ground floor, two upper storeys and a large panoramic terrace. The basement was used by as staff quarters while the ground floor houses a reception room, library, audience chamber, dining room and the queen’s private chapel. The queen’s apartment, some smaller apartments and the guest rooms are upstairs and can be accessed by a wide staircase with windows.
The building has a large garden designed by Ludwig Winter.
The Villa has welcomed illustrious guests including many Italian and foreign nobles, politicians and artists. Margherita of Savoy, the first queen of Italy died here on 4 January 1926 aged 74.
Today it is a museum complex, managed by the Soprintendenza per i Beni Architettonici e Paesaggistici della Liguria.
