Built in the 1600s by the Marquis of Durazzo on a hill in Santa Margherita Ligure (GE), Villa Durazzo is surrounded by a large garden famous for its collections of palms and camellias.
Open to the public all year round, the apartments on the piano nobile display paintings from the Genovese school, frescoes and trompe-l’oeil, furnishings from a range of eras, Murano chandeliers, plasterwork and floors in tiles and Genovese flooring. The salone degli Stucchi, with a large Louis XVI style chandelier, is located next to the camera Umbertina, used by Queen Margherita of Savoy which has remained intact. The villa also houses the Museo artistico Vittorio Giovanni Rossi, dedicated to the writer and journalist from Santa Margherita Ligure.
The ancient park of about 3 hectares overlooks the gulf, its terrace occupied by a small citrus grove of orange, lemon and grapefruit planted by the Durazzo family. The 19th century Italian garden has box hedges in geometrical patterns, embellished with numerous cycads, roses and camellias. The Romantic English-style wood which spreads down the hill slope, features exotic and Mediterranean plants.
