Tenuta Monacelle in Selva di Fasano, Monopoli (province of Bari) is a borgo whose 28 trulli are huddled in groups separated by twisting streets. The borgo was built in 1790 as a convent for Benedictine nuns.
It was the site of daily rustic activities as attested by the outside oven which the nuns used to bake the bread and cook the food they distributed to locals. The former henhouse, linked to the structure by a narrow staircase that is still visible, was located on an upper storey to prevent predators from accessing it. The exterior of a deconsecrated little church, the “cummersa”, can also be seen.
Six white farmhouses stand amidst enormous oak trees in a garden of 20+ hectares.
