Masseria Mongelli-Carosito is a fortified structure situated in a dominant position above the fields of Martina Franca (province of Taranto), surrounded by countryside, woods of ancient oak trees and Mediterranean undergrowth, with dry stone walls outlining its boundaries.
The main body of the fortified masseria (farmhouse), dating to the 16th century, is a quadrilateral courtyard accessed through a large portal which contributes to the monumental appearance of the complex. The courtyard, which slopes slightly towards the exterior, is in part paved, in part shows the rock beneath. It is encircled by a wide boundary wall which gives the complex the appearance of a fortress. The residential wing is roofed with tiles, in the rare “a pignon” style typical of Apulia. On the first floor is a large panoramic terrace.
Part of the farmhouse is only for agricultural purposes, with animal stables and equipment sheds accessed from the exterior and the courtyard. There is also a small consecrated chapel inside the courtyard.
The masseria’s simple, sober atmosphere, retained across four centuries, combined with its imposing appearance make it absolutely unique.
