Mondaino (Rimini) is located 15 km from Riccione and Cattolica, perched on the crest that divides the Tavollo and Foglia valleys, the regions of Romagna and le Marche.
First a fortified village was built on the hill where deer used to graze as the fortress of the lords of Malatesta, bordering the land belonging to their rivals, the Montefeltro dukes of Urbino. This history permeates the entire structure of the village and is recalled every year with a re-enactment known as the "palio del daino".
Mondaino holds many surprises: a stunning circular square; a castle with a panoramic view over sea and mountains; and footpaths hidden beneath the village that come with mysterious legends. There are also the alleys, the noble palaces and a museum with fossils of the animals that lived here millions of years ago, plus a botanical garden with very interesting examples of Mediterranean plants.
Piazza Maggiore is perhaps the most unusual square in the province of Rimini, it is certainly the most interesting of the 19th century squares. Its semi-circular form, outlined by a neoclassical portico, is due to the architect Francesco Cosci. The central thoroughfare of the village begins from this round square known affectionately by locals as “piazza padella – the frying pan”.
Several kilometres outside Mondaino is a former experimental arboretum of Mediterranean plants.
