Casertavecchia is the ancient residential centre of Caserta. It rises 400m above sea level, a few kilometres north-east of Caserta, in the foothills of the Monti Tifatini. The centre of Caserta in the Middle Ages, it gradually lost importance as the civil and religious functions moved to the new city.
In 1960, Casertavecchia was included in the list of Italian National Monuments and newly re-evaluated from a tourism perspective. Places of interest include the Duomo di St. Michael Archangel, built in the 12th century and the cathedral for the diocese of Caserta until 1841, the remains of the Castle and its characteristic alleyways. There are many points in the ancient hamlet that offer a splendid panorama.
