Built on the site of Saticula, an ancient Samnite city, with underground tunnels carved out of the tuff, alleys paved with stone, medieval churches, colonnades and palaces belonging to the feudal aristocracy, Sant’Agata dei Goti has a stunning cultural, historical and architectural heritage which has earned it the name of “pearl of the Samnite territory”.
The alleyways, which meet in Via Roma, the main thoroughfare of the historical centre, are studded with frescoed churches and Roman remains can be spotted everywhere. The Duomo, dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, has an imposing Romanesque portal, columns with Corinthian capitals and Baroque stucchi added at a later date.
