The ancient residential centre of Apice, probably founded in Roman times, was shaken in 1962 by a violent earthquake which lead to its evacuation by almost all its inhabitants who moved to a new centre built on the hill in front. Now completely abandoned, the borgo is a testament to the rural architecture of the time and has preserved unchanged many elements of daily life that date to before the quake. From the old streetlamps to the ancient workshops, Apice, shaken but not damaged by the earthquake, is a picturesque borgo that is suspended in time with the only intervention since being the restoration of the 8th century castle.
