A residential settlement dating to the Samnite period, Tocco Claudio (BN) rises on the lower eastern slopes of Monte Taburno. It was a famous fortified centre in the Middle Ages, but its power declined over the centuries because of a series of earthquakes, especially that of 1456 which decimated it. The borgo has a medieval layout, with a central alley running down its entire length, with perpendicular alleyways leading off it. The architecture is mostly simple with a single religious building remaining, the deconsecrated Church of St. Vincent. After the earthquake in 1980, the ancient centre of Tocco Claudio was abandoned and a new village was built in Friuni.
