Located on the banks of the river Ofanto, Calitri is a hamlet that rises from the top of a hill in Alta Irpinia. Following the earthquake of November 1980, residents abandoned the area until the early 1990s. Today the hamlet is being revitalised, with a series of events and initiatives that emphasize the value of its unique nature, such as the Sponz Fest directed by Vinicio Capossela.
The beauty of the hamlet is the result of the mixture of modern buildings with ancient rock settlements. The numerous places of worship include the Church del Calvario, Church of Sant’Antuono and Church of Santa Lucia.
Once the defensive heart of the city and documented since the 13th century, the structure of the Castle of Calitri has been seriously compromised by the earthquakes that have hit the area over the centuries. Restored rooms in the Castle complex house the Museum of Ceramics.
